PURCHASING K9 DOG

The Prairieland Standard Schnauzer Club of Central Illinois (PSSC) provides a variety of projects in support of animals. One project it is closely monitoring is the possible grant funding in 2023 from the AKC Reunite Adopt a K-9 Cop (www.akcreunite.org/k9) to purchase police K-9s. A police dog is specifically trained to assist members of law enforcement. The commonly used breeds are German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois.

PSSC will work with Corn Belt KC, the local all-breed club that hosts the dog shows over memorial weekend, to secure the grant once grant funds again become available and do community fundraising for the purchase and equipping of the K-9 officer.

K-9 BSD-3R, Remote Ball Launcher with Black cover
The range of the K9-BSD device is designed to eject popular reward items with enough distance and speed to engage prey drive in most working dogs.

K-9 BSD Benefits: In training timing is everything.

The K-9 BSD allows split second timing of reinforcement.
Unmatched drive and focus with a remote active reward.
Reduces both unwanted handler cues and need for assistants.
Delivers a variety of rewards.
Reinforce behaviors when animal and handler are separated by large distances.

The training device was presented to K-9 Officer Shane Bachman of the Normal (Illinois) Police Department. You can go to youtube.com to see how detection training is done using a Behavior Shaping Device. PSSC has been in contact with Lieutenant Jon Albee, Patrol Division Commander of the McLean County Sheriff’s Office. He supervises their K9 Unit. He is a previous handler and has been fortunate enough to train with several other agencies including the National Police Canine Foundation. The McLean County Sheriff’s Office currently have 2 dogs and plan to add in the near future a 3rd  dog. Lieutenant Albee informed PSSC that they are looking at purchasing a dog in the coming year and would very much appreciate any grant money to aid in the purchase of the dog, equipment, and training.

PSSC Donates Dog Training Device to the Normal Police Department

The Prairieland Standard Schnauzer Club of Central Illinois (PSSC) donated a behavior shaping device (BSD) to the Normal Police Department to be used in the training of dogs by the Normal, Illinois and Bloomington, Illinois Police Departments and the McLean County Sheriff’s Office. The K9 BSD or Behavior Shaping Device can be a valuable tool in shaping detection dog behavior. The device is most effective on dogs when behavior can be controlled with ball, tug etc. in a variety of different environments. The trainer controls the training as the K-9 BSD is just a unique tool to expand positive reinforcement training.
